Abandoned Gold Mines

Abandoned Gold Mines provides information on gold mining regions of California from the years following initial discoveries of gold in the late 1840’s.

When gold was first discovered, the predominant method in use was panning and working the streams. As the supply of gold became more scarce, more efficient methods were employed.

Sluice boxes gave way to the water monitor. Whole hillsides could be washed away to reveal ore that was then worked over to separate the gold.
